“The measure of man is what he does with power.”

All leaders have some type of position power but not all leaders fully grasp their specific expertise. To be an expert is a lofty term that sounds arrogant when we declare it about ourselves. But we don’t have to shout it from the mountaintops to leverage it successfully. That is a tricky situation that takes some finesse. That is the focus of this lesson.

First, we Discover and identify the expert power you already hold. Often we overlook our expertise, assuming that many can do what we do. At other times, we may arrogantly believe we are better at things that we really are. In this section, we expect you to come to a better understanding of your expertise.

Second, we help you Declare your expert power with the RESPECT acronym. But we cannot simply declare ourselves an expert, we must first have the knowledge and the relevance. Knowledge and relevance provide the background to our becoming relevant to any team in any situation.

Third, we help you Leverage your power most efficiently with a self-assessment. This series of questions is designed to help you fine tune what is best for you and your situation to maximize your expert power. Upon completion of this lesson, we expect you will have a good mental understanding of the expert power you have within your situation. We also expect you will have a better understanding of what you are capable of doing with that power and how you can use it to create a collaborative spirit that will lift obstacles and exceed goals.
