Experts estimate that only 5% of communication is effective. Ouch. As leaders, we know that if we do not connect, we cannot lead. Yet many are more focused on speaking and pay little attention to listening. Unfortunately, they are wasting an incredible amount of power.

But listening and speaking effectively is more than waiting our turn to speak and following a specific formula. It is a creation of meaning between two very different people. That is incredibly difficult at times. It takes a specific mindset, spirit and set of actions. That is the focus of this lesson.

First, we Discover and identify the communication power you already hold. While we all likely believe we communicate effectively, it is valuable to take a closer look to see where we connect well and where we could still use some help. That is what we focus on in the Discovery section.

Second, we help you Declare your communication power with the GREAT communication acronym. But we cannot simply declare ourselves a communication expert; we must first have the knowledge and the relevance.

Third, we help you Leverage your communication power with a self-assessment. This series of questions is designed to help you fine tune what is best for you and your situation in order to maximize your communication power. As valuable as these questions are, you may find the most benefit in listening to others as you communicate with them. You may need to specifically ask them how you are doing and listen carefully. But this power, maybe more than any other type of power, cannot be undervalued and you must constantly strive to improve your communication skills.

Upon completion of this lesson, we expect you will have a good mental understanding of the communication power you have within your situation. We also expect you will have a better understanding of what you are capable of doing with that power and how you can use it to create a collaborative spirit that will lift obstacles and exceed goals.
